Sculpture of Dodeigne

Sir: Your reference to the work of Eugene Dodeigne in your last edition could imply that the quality of his art might be in question. This misses the crux of Mr TalbotRice's problem completely.

Importing works of art into this country is an unbelievable combat with customs authorities on the Continent — even when the artist brings back his own paintings. If you could draw attention through your columns to the time-wasting bureaucracy involved when painters exhibit abroad, you would perform a real service. Some official might see his way to drafting a simple document recognized by perhaps (dare I hope) two, or even three, west European countries. Maggie Clarke 7 Warwick Square, London SW1
