Harping on Wales

Sir: Patrick Marnham's quoting of the poem by Christopher Logue about Wales (Notebook, 28 August) brings W. H. Auden to mind. In 'It's no use raising a shout' (The English Auden p.42-43) Auden puts a different emphasis on the matter:

... when life fails What's the good of going to Wales?' Perhaps both poets are alluding to some earlier commentator on the subject?
