C'est un cygne

IT'S ALL GO at the Office of Fair Trading. A team of its dauntless investigators has just got back from a week in Paris, where they have been checking out the Bourse. You might have thought that share trading in Paris was fairly low on the OFT's worry list, but the Bourse has applied to the Trea- sury to be a recognised exchange under British law, and the Chancellor has sought advice from the Director-General of Fair Trading, and the Director-General has directed that it must be examined on the spot. This will reassure British investors who plan to subscribe for French privatisa- tions — though they are likely to find it cheaper and easier to buy the shares in London — and refute any suggestion that the OFT's staff, like the rest of us, quite like to go on a swan.
