Civil war and bloodshed have visited Switzerland. A large army

of fanatics have attacked the city of Lucerne, because the assailants differed with the local Government of that Canton as to the expediency of appointing seven Jesuits to be schoolmasters ; and the invaders have been repulsed with terrible loss. The language of the Protestants at witnessing these scenes is most astounding : they are struck, not with the lawless crime of the Free Corps, but with the wickedness of Lucerne in provoking the displeasure of the criminals ! Another Diet is held ; but as no change has come over the spirit of the people, it is difficult to see what good can be expected from another Federal Council.
