In My Garden A sudden warm spell in spring is

always welcome and does good. but it has some drawbacks. It encourages the evil habit—as evil in plants as in horses—of bolting. This spring has proved the case of those who believe in planting their spring cabbages late. The earlier planted are already bolting to seed. One beneficent effect has been the hurrying. of the leaf ; and in regard to plums at any rate the quicker the leaf gains on the blossom the lesser the danger from frost. In such dry spell' it is important to remember that cuttings of bushes more recently trans- planted are likely—like our domestic poultry—to be in special need of

water. W. BEACH THOMAS.
