Parkas and Purple Hearts

From Mr John Miles Sir: Your article (The Spectator's notes, 5 April) referring to current barter rate between the US and UK troops struck a chord. In 1953, my battalion, 1st Royal Fusiliers, was next in the line to the Indian Head Division, and I can remember clearly swapping whisky for tents — damned good they were too. By the second bottle, we could get rifles and ammunition, parkas and even Purple Hearts. Plus boxes of rations.

Nothing changes, does it?

John Miles Rugby, Warwickshire From Corporal M.TR. Taylor Sir: I am writing to say thank you to you and your team for producing such a fine magazine. Every week my girl back home. Anna, sends me a copy, and in it I find plenty of 'ammunition' to use in our 'debates'. Matt Taylor PS: God save the Queen!
