Naff

Sir: The word `naff (Diary, 22 July) has gained its popularity in these anti-elitist times precisely because its meaning has to do with style and taste rather than class (it is now naff to say 'common); absolutely anyone can be naff from Janet Street- Porter to certain members of the royal family. I would venture to define its meaning as trying unsuccessfully to be stylish. Lord Hailsham makes no effort in this area, so he isn't naff; Cecil Parkinson tries, but fails, so he is.
