"tale of Jewish life in Russia" is intended, doubtless, to satisfy an interest that is very widely felt at the present time in a suffering race. It is perhaps less appropriate than it might be, because the interest of the plot chiefly depends on the conversion of some of the characters to Christianity. Just at the moment, Christianity does not present itself in attractive colours to the Russian Jew. Apart from this, the tale is sufficiently well written.
