M. Briand is to be congratulated on the events of

the past fortnight. His physical endurance has survived the terrific calls made. upon it in London and Paris. We trust that Sir Austen Chamberlain, a much lesS " tough" man, may return from Geneva without the' exhaustion which seems to be a growing risk for European statesmen. M. Briand and M.- Loucheur carried their finance Bill, involving inflation, through the Chamber with some difficulty. M. Briand had to make an ahnost passionate appeal to the deputies not to plunge France into chaos by again turning out her Government. . The effect of this appeal reached the Senate too, where to our surprise there was no serious opposition. * * * *
