be a referee by an applicant for a job with the BBC. My friend agreed. He was amazed, a few days later, to receive from the corporation a Portentous-looking envelope containing, among other things, this message: 'Your views are re- quested on the candidate's:

J. Integrity, standard of values and general suit- ability.

2. Initiative, organising ability and capacity for sustained effort.

3. Originality, judgment and imagination. ' 4. Capacity to work both individually and as a member of a team.

5. Family background.

6. Ability to appreciate the difference of outlook of various sections of the community.

7. Outstanding characteristics and Weak points.' And what was the post which required such a bandying about of abstract nouns? Personal assistant to Sir Hugh dreene? Hardly. The job in question was that of studio &signer (tem- porary).
