Stray sheep

Sir: If your editorial (5 February) is right, the British public is happier to spend £1,860 million in 1983-86 to defend the indefensi- ble — the Falklands — rather than a paltry £1 million to try to counter the illogical, but seductive, propaganda of CND. In that case it is one more proof of how self- deluding this island of sheep can be. But it is no reason why the government shouldn't attempt to change the public mind — a notoriously fickle entity. That they choose the free enterprise JWT over the statist COI is surely entirely laudable, though one can only regret that they have not closed the COI down all together.

I am well aware that no pots of Moscow gold have actually been found under Mgr Bruce Kent's bed, but it is indisputable that the World Peace Council is right behind CND, as long as it takes a unilateralist stance. The WPC is a well-authenticated Soviet front organisation, If the Kremlin thinks West European unilateralism worth subsidising, why shouldn't Michael Heseltine bankroll the opposite side? Your argument that he should sell the Govern- ment's defence policy all by himself is as absurd as suggesting that he should take on the Warsaw Pact single-bandedlin the event of war.
