THE JUDGES' SALARIES

[To the Editor of THE SPECTATOR.] Sia,—Perhaps you have had enough letters on the subject of Judges' Salaries, but may I just say in reply to your corre- spondent who sits at the feet of the immortal Bentham, and may possibly be a Stipendiary himself, that although he and his brethren may be underpaid, it does not alter the fact that County Court Judges are? They may only sit 14.4 days, but in many districts they do not rise till 0 p.m. or later. High Court Judges average about 170 days, but except perhaps when on Circuit they rise sharp at 4 p.m. and the nominal salary of a County Court .Judge is about one third that of a High Court Judge.--I am, Sir, &c., Hindhead, Surrey. HENRY N. MATHEWS.
