Rifts in the junta

Sir: Mr Llewellyn-Smith writes from Athens (5 January), 'The junta ... proposed to reduce income tax on all income -brackets, presumably on the principle adopted by Papandreou in 1964, that the less tax the Greeks have to pay, the more likely they are to pay it.'

I am afraid Mr Llewellyn-Smith has been mis- informed. The 'principle' of income tax reduction was not put forward by Papandreou in 1964 but by another Greek political leader, Mr S. B. Markezinis, in 1959. It was not adopted by Mr Papandreou, or at least it was not implemented. In actual fact his government increased direct taxation.
