'The wit of Leslie Frewin'

Sir: Many of us in publishing will rejoice that Mr Leslie Frewin's services to wit are beginning to re- ceive their proper due—John Wells's 'After- thought,' 5 January. A number of us, however, are really dismayed to discover that in his select anthology The wit of Leslie Frewin John Wells omits what is probably the sharpest response of all. When asked why he became a publisher Leslie Frewin, it is reported. replied 'Because it is an Occupation for Gentlemen, and I have always wanted to be one.'
