Q. More and more women are taking up shooting. I

always use a shooting stick, and have done so for years. When I am at my peg and a fellow male gun comes along for a gossip, I stay perched on my stick. If a female gun comes along. should I stand up out of politeness or be more egalitarian and carry on as normal, talking while seated? Although it is almost the end of the shooting season, I would welcome your advice in anticipation of a shoot this weekend.

P.D,, London SW1 A. If you are on your peg waiting because there is a lull, it is accepted that you are, at this point, in the grip of the sport and would not be expected to observe normal etiquette. If, however, you are amid a group standing around having elevenses or drinking bullshots, then you must stand up. Forget being egalitarian: now that the Englishman himself has become an endangered species, his traditional observances must be more closely adhered to than ever.
