Bar fees

Sir: Although Auberon Waugh's hard-won knowledge of law of libel is impressive (Another voice, 28 June), the disappointed litigant might do better to rely on a successful bid for Chancellor's beautiful wife and two exceptionally pleasing daugh- ters than count on being able to escape paying his barrister's fees. He is quite correct in saying that a barrister cannot sue for his fees but, under the quaint conven- tions of the legal profession, the barrister can report the solicitor to the Law Society for not paying the fees and the solicitor can sue his client, for the barrister's fees he has had to pay on his behalf.
