Sir: Since Mr Ingrams (Books, 7 June) is annoyed at

my claim to have been right about events in 1936, I have taken the trouble to look up in the Spectator volume what I did say at the time:

If a real crisis arises, and we are involved in a war, no doubt in that day and to meet that need, a real government of the nation would arise in which Labour would claim at least an equal share.

Isn't that precisely what did happen in 1940? Should I apologise to Mr Ingrams for having been right?
