A name for an effect

Sir: Simon Courtauld's observation (5 June) that the complexion of Spanish news- papers can be judged by whether they refer to 'Puerto Argentina' or 'Puerto Stanley' finds its echo on French radio. RTL, the French 'station peripherique' with the highest listening figures in France, made the temporary shift from the 'Port Stanley' to the 'Puerto Argentina' usage. The first time I heard it was after a news item concerning the British destruction of one of the Exocet missiles, of which the French are inordinately proud. While nobody would wish to listen to RTL, whose output is given over in large part to parlour games and self-congratulation for its foreign affairs coverage, nevertheless I found this piece of pique profoundly

ritating.
