Fishy tale

Sir: In his review of Roger Berthoud's Graham Sutherland biography (29 May), Arthur Marshall recalled some items on view at the Surrealist Exhibition of 1936, quoting the author's reference to a painting of a kipper with a real kipper attached. The real fish was not part of the original art work but was affixed to it, on a visit, by none other than William Walton. I ran across this information when reading An- thony Powell's memoirs. (According to Mr Powell it was a bloater which Walton at- tached, but he and Mr Berthoud are surely referring to the same exhibit.)

Sir William, I feel sure, would relish the fact that his amendment to the original should still be recalled, 46 years on, as one of the most memorable pieces of sculpture on display.
