Don't leave it to Smith

Sir: Alan Watkins's experience at W.H. Smith (Diary, 29 October) is not uncom- mon. When I was younger it was said that one entered W.H. Smith only to enquire the way to the nearest bookshop.

My own nomination for a 'proper', indeed excellent bookshop, and convenient for Sloane Square too, would be John San- doe's excellent establishment in Blacklands Terrace, hard by Peter Jones.
