Mr FitzGibbon (October 5) is right. mY Mind is inferior — would anyone With a superior mind play the mouth ?Egan for a living') — and as he says, my "'Oughts are muddled 'as well. Goes with an inferior mind. But it's not a yincbctive one. So unvindictive is MY inferior mind that I will not join Mr F. in throwing dead cats. , He really ought to get his facts right — tb fact I'd be happy if he got one fact right. If he wants to attack me, and will Write to me c/o this paper I promise to
give him much better material, and mine will be true.
Item: I have never been summoned before any Congressional Committee, McCarthy's or anyone else's. (I'm told it's more correct to say anyone's else but with my muddled thoughts, I just can't.)
The nearest I ever came to a Congressional Committee was when Robert Taylor, then President of the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals (whew!) wanted the members of the Beverly Hills Tennis Club to sign a loyalty oath as a requisite of membership. I refused and was henceforth regarded with deep suspicion by Mr Taylor (especially when I served to his backhand). Item: As I never appeared before a Committee I thus had no chance to take the Fifth or any other Amendment. If Mr F. really wants to see the Fifth in action, just wait 'until the Watergate trials begin. Boy, will you ever see some Fifth Amendment takings! Mr F. should study the US Constitution before setting out to re-interpret it. The Fifth Amendment was part of the original Bill of Rights to guarantee that no man be compelled to testify against himself. McCarthy did water it down with his references to "Fifth Amendment Commies" but the Principle remains valid. Item: Mr F. says I was "released." From what? The Beverly Hills Tennis Club?
Item: The Fifth I didn't take is proof to Mr F. that I was trying to overthrow the Constitution by force, which is difficult armed only with a mouth organ, even one with sharps and flats.
I am, and have been since 1946, interested in the overthrow of Richard Milhous Nixon, not by force, but by the ballot.
Muddled, inferior and vindictive though I be, I'm still delighted that Mr F. has bought his daughter a mouth organ. (But watch it, F. Do you want her to grow up m. i. and v. like me?).
