FARM TENANCIES.

Sin,—Referring to Mr. Dowding's letter, will you allow me to point out that the hardship of which he complains is largely, if not wholly, the result of the system of jobbing agricultural land which has lately become the fashion ? This is so new a thing that the Inland Revenue officials do not recognize it as a business, and therefore it escapes Income Tax, &c., and so the man who jobs land can make very large profits with impunity, while the man who jobs stocks and shares—or, indeed, anything else—has to hand over a large portion of his profits to the State. The remedy,

surely, is simple—treat dealing in land like dealing in anything else, and make it subject to Income Tax and Excess Profits Duty, and the new industry will very soon cease.—I am, Sir, &c.,
