Think of a number

"-T hose of us who can remember every 1 number except the one we want — school boot-locker number, yes: S.G.War- burg's old telephone number, yes: War- burg's new number, not a hope — have found a friend at the National Westminster Bank. The NatWest, like its competitors, hands out plastic cards which, tactfully handled, will cause the bank's cash- dispensing machines to dispense cash. But the machine will need to know your per- sonal number, so as to stop thieves or pickpockets from using your card, and the bank urges you not to write the number down, for the same reason. So you are supposed to memorise it, and then forget it. All right, say NatWest, think of a number you can remember, and tell us what it is, and we'll give you that one. So NatWest, which is investing in electronic equipment at the rate of £120 million a year, has solved its most intractable prob- lem — programming people to use it.
