Kindly godfather

Sir: Amongst other mistakes in Denis Winter's Haig's Command picked up by Richard Lamb in his recent review (Books, 30 March) was that Eric Geddes was a fierce critic of my father. Quite the con- trary. His sense of admiration made a strong impression on me as a ten-year-old boy when he, as my godfather, kindly had me to stay after my father's death.
