In the Commons on Wednesday it was announced that Runny-

mede is to be withdrawn from auction . It appears that it was actually put up for sale in July, but that there was no bidding. We presume that the auction-room frequenters thought it must be a hoax and would have nothing to do with it. The retreat of the Government was covered with words which show that even now the Ministry is unable to distinguish between Magna Charta Island and the great meadows of Runnymede and Longmead popularly combined under the title of Runnymede.
