It might be urged that if the Germans have failed,

the Russians have achieved utterly barren victories, but that would be a superficial view of the net result of the German failures. The Germans and Austrians, we must remember, have lost heavily in men and material, and in neither inetancie will they easily be able to replace their losses. Judged by the standard of attrition, they have not only suffered more than their enemies, but the enemies have "plenty more where those came from," while the Teutonic allies have not. To put it in another way, the influence of attrition is being most heavily felt by the side which can bear attrition less well. That far Germany is the writing on the wall.
