Papers from Hobart Town, in Van Diemen's Land, to the

12th Sep- tember, announce the arrival of Sir Eardley Wilmot, the new Governor; and he had already set out on a tour to visit part of the Colony. Sir Eardley took out orders from the Colonial Office, for an important modification of the convict system. The practice of assignment to pri- vate service is not to be resumed ; but the men are to he employed during their period of probation on roads and other improvements of unsettled lands, and are to receive the whole of their earnings, or only part, the residue to be lodged ou their account in savings banks. The new plan is expected at once to increase the general stock of labour in the colony and to afford opportunity for the reformation of the convicts.
