On Tuesday afternoon the Guildhall witnessed a remark- able scene.

In answer to the request of a deputation repre- senting the chief commercial interests of London, the Lord Mayor called a public meeting in support of the South African policy of the Government. The great ball was packed with representatives of every City activity, from the Stock Exchange and the Bank of England to the orainary merchant, fully four thousand people, according to the papers, standing. Votes of confidence in the Ministers and the Government policy wore enthusiastically carried. The meeting was organised as an answer to the so-called demonstration in the Queen's Hall, and an effective answer it is.
