THE STATUS OF AUSTRIA

SIR,—Perhaps some of your readers can explain to me why, in the light of the declaration that the country is as much the victim of German aggression as Czechoslovakia or the Netherlands, Austria should now be under military occupation by the Allies.—Yours, &c.,

[Czechoslovakia and Holland both had constitutional Governments ready to take charge of their countries' affairs. Austria, after her libera- tion, got together an emergency Government, but till it is recognised by the major Allied Powers military occupation naturally continues.—ED., The Spectator.]
