The St Michael's Group for Social Action

The St Michael's Group for Social Action came to play with us today: Wheelchair Basketball was the name of the game. So that everyone might suffer from the same handicap, they confined themselves to wheelchairs like ours. We laughed good-naturedly as they stumbled around on their circular legs.

They found turning easier than they'd supposed, but speed a handful. Last week, they said, they'd played Hopping Hockey with the lame.

Good fun was had, they thought, by all.

Our game got underway. The ball flew, fell, bounced. We outmanoeuvred them of course at every turn; outran them, you might say, on our strong arms.

In short, we beat them as soundly as they wished.

All the while cheerfulness abounded: we shouted, laughed, cussed with restraint, called each other names, made light of all gravity, cheered, talked.

Then they got up and walked.
