Sandelson's support

Sir: Michael Trend, reporting from Cam- bridge (`Shirley slips back', 30 May), stated that I was there supporting Robert Rhodes James, the Conservative candidate. In fact I have not been in Cambridge throughout the election.

I cannot foretell what the result will be next Thursday but I certainly hope that the Conservative retains the seat since in my view every Tory seat lost to Alliance candidates will in effect be a Labour gain. It is well known that I have supported Conservative candidates in many parts of the country but in no constituencies where

their opponents have been SDP parliamen- tary colleagues, let alone, as in the case of Shirley Williams, the president of the party of which I am a member.
