Most of our readers will, we think, be a little

surprised to hear that the proportion of inquests to deaths in all Eugland is 5 per cent., or one in every 20; and that in London it rises to 7-9 per cent. or one in every 12i. A "violent death" seems from some statistics in the British Medical Journal to come to one man in every twenty-five.
