MONEY IN RUSSIA SIR,—In his article on " Money in

Russia," Mr. Leon Kiril says, " He cannot draw an income from rent, royalties, &c." In the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Pamphlet No. 375 of December, 1941, it is written:

" The late Maxim Gorki made a fortune out of book royalties, and no voice was raised against such an accumulation of wealth by an individual."

Is it not then the case that fortunes can be made out of royalties, as indeed they are made by professional men out of their earnings?— I am, yours faithfully, A. G. FULLER. Penkill Castle, Girvan, Ayrshire.
