Panglossian Ross

From Frank Fuller Sir: Deborah Ross accuses Sir Andrew Green's Migration Watch of 'not especially helping matters' (`Green's pleasant land', 6 March). Isn't it possible that compilation and publication of statistics neither help nor hinder, but simply provide information?

Ms Ross's suspicion that Migration Watch is 'polarising the issue rather than contributing to a proper, much needed debateis a perverse verdict on an organisation doing little else but contributing to the debate.

Her payoff line about returning to 'the inner-city London street that is meant to be a terrifying hell but looks OK to me' is gloriously irrelevant in the context of 'a proper debate'. Misleading, too, since Sir Andrew ' had asserted no such thing. As a presumably well-paid journalist hailing a cab by reflex, as it were, rather than waiting for a bus, Ms Ross's inner city may not be quite the same as some other people's.
