That chef d'eeuvre of painting, The Magdalen by CORREGIO, which

we noticed two or three weeks since, is now exhibited at No. 49, Pall Mall. We have been again to see it ; and its wonderful power and beauty impressed us more deeply than before with a sense of the con- summate art of CORREGIO in the management of chiaroscuro, and his exquisite delicacy of sentiment. The picture was offered to the British Institution for the ensuing exhibition of the works of the Old Masters; but declined by the persons who "manage" the noble Directors and mismanage the Institution : they don't want the public to see it. It ought to be secured for the National Gallery; but as it does not belong to a needy Peer, we suppose it will be lost to this country. The jobbers, in speaking of its merits, which even they cannot deny, "damn with faint praise :" the application of golden oint- ment is necessary to open their eyes.
