about his father from Auberon Waugh! One feels that Evelyn would have approved absolutely, and it is pleasing to think that it may have cheered his brief period-I am no theologian- in purgatory. Happy us, who have such permanently excellent works to re-read; and who have the assurance that the talent is not extinguished.

I should like, if I may, to add that Anthony Burgess's remarks about EW in the seEc7Krolt were wonderfully apt. Mr Burgess-unlike some others- made no claim to know the unknowable; and if for no other reason, his sensible and balanced eulogium deserves to be unforgotten and enjoyed.
