Maigret on the Defensive, by Simenon 11-tarnish Hamilton, 13s. 6d.).

We are shocked to read that the respected Maigret has been mis- conducting himself—at his age, and with a young girl. But has he in fact? Maigret on the defensive brings all his guns to bear and does pretty well in the circumstances. The Big Greed, by Kenneth Giles (Gollancz, 21s.). This author's second thriller certainly bears out the promise shown in his first, which I recommended last November. This time the theme is greed and its effect on five already slightly 'bent' people; with a huge sum of money in their temporary keeping, three at least couldn't control their avarice. Unusual plot, well done. Murderer's Fen, by Andrew Garve (Crime Club, I6s.). This is an upside-down. inside-out sort of thriller, where there is a facade of murder, with something else behind it. Recommended.
