STATE OF THE REPRESENTATION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE SPECTATOR.

Wimbledon, 9th November, 1830.

SIR—Your " Anatomy " has excited very general attention, and has very great merit. The errors are unavoidable, and in most instances to be corrected by the individual cases. It was not my intention to trou- ble you by any remarks, if they had not been provoked by your native "Correspondent of Hedon," asserting that Hedon was not a close borough. Perhaps not; but it has been, and continues to be, a venal one.

The ascendant patrons have been the IvEsos family, attornies re- siding there, who have always commanded one seat, and sometimes both, as every one at Hedon can tell. Colonel Joins BAILLIE, the present member for the Nairn boroughs, represented Hedon for some sessions, and regularly paid his 40001.; a very fair and marketable price. I believe Mr. HENRY IvEsoN, solicitor, who resides at Bever- ley, has managed this concern more majorwra.

St. Ives has been curiously managed. Mr. 'WELL'S sLEY contracted with the. Trustees of the late Sir CHRISTOPHER HAWKINS for the pur- chase of the houses and other property, for a large sum of money, and deposited 5000t.; but he did not complete his purchase. The interval of the late election enabled him to become one of the representatives, and the other seat has been filled by Mr. J. MORRISON ; so that his own seat and Mr. Moitaisorr's are worth rather more than the deposit. The Trustees can enforce the fulfilment of the contract by a suit in Chancery, unless they prefer taking the forfeited deposit ; but this must be with the assent of Mr. WELLEsmer, as he would become an awkward cus- tomer in equity, under the existing circumstances.

Montgomeryshire, represented by the Right Hon. C. W. WAVysisi, Is controlled, perhaps equally, by Sir W. W. WY/ix and Lord CravE, the Lord of Powisland, though his father has the title. The last con- test was in 1774, between Mr. MOSTYN OWEN, supported by the Powrs influence, and Major WILLIAMS, in the WYNN interest ; the former was successful. The marriage of Sir W. W. Wrissr with Lady HARRIET CLIVE, daughter of Earl Powis, has confirmed Mr. WYNN'S seat. He is a respectable representative ; and it is due to that gentleman to state, that he was the most efficient President of the Board of Control who ever filled that office, although Lord MELviLLE and 31r. CANNING were among his predecessors. His patronage has been anost honourably bestowed : he was the only President that gave writer- ships as prizes to the scholars of the University of Oxford, who ob- tained them solely by merit.

am, Sir, your's, &c. S. H.
