Foraging Through Georgia

One often reads that Americans consider understatement to be a prominent British charac- teristic. I've just been reading in the New York Times an account of General Mar is hell, boys !') Sherman's famous march through Georgia which devastated the State for teo generations and pole-axed the Confederacy. Of that monumental act of total war which began a hundred years ago this week, Sherman applied an equally monumental piece of understatement, His men, he confessed, were 'a little loose foraging. . .
