MR. WILSON'S SPEECH

SIR,—Both your leading article and Alan Watkins's 'Political Commentary' condemn the Prime Minister in most indignant terms for breaking the rules of the club. How despicable of him to attack a new member before he has made his maiden speech, etc. etc. What about the real issue? Most decent- minded people would not object if, say, Emanuel Shinwell debagged the Member for Smethwick in the tea room, because what happens to him is as irrelevant to the heart of the problem as the self- righteous pontification of your political correspon- dents.

What matters is that built-in prejudice against coloured people was deliberately inflamed and given full rein in Smethwick and if other constituency parties follow suit at the next election, we shall hardly be in a position to express any valid opinions on the policies of Dr. Verwoerd or Mr. Ian Smith. If lain Macleod can stop congratulating himself on his liberal record as Colonial Secretary for a Moment and grasp this particular nettle as Sir Alec 'Douglas-Home has so patently failed to do, some of us might be able to share in his high regard for himself.
