THE MOVEMENT AND THE GROUP

SIR,--t must repudiate most strongly the statement made in last week's. Spectator by Mr. John Tripp in which he asserts that there is an organised faction of poets linked together by Poetry and Jazz con- certs.

It is true that Dannie Absc, Thomas Blackburn and Adrian Mitchell have all read at these concerts which I have organised on behalf of Centre 42, the Welsh Arts Council, etc. But many other poets whose work I admire have also participated at my invita- tion, including various poets associated with the Group--such as Alan Brownjohn and Peter Porter. None of these poets form 'another unofficial net- work' any more than do, say, the contributors to the Spectator. Indeed, to suggest that these poets form a faction -is as foolish as to suggest that all the poets who publish poems in the Spectator share Mr. lain Macleod's political views. I hope that Mr. Tripp Will withdraw his irresponsible statement.
