Mr. Murray has in the press volume one of "Life and Works of Alex- ander Pope," by the Reverend Whitwell Elwin, late editor of the Quar- terly Review.

The third and concluding volume of Mr. Mlinight's "Life of Edmund Burke," is announced as forthcoming by Messrs. Chapman and Hall.

A biography of the late Robert Stephenson, drawn from authentic documents, by Mr. J. Cordy Jeaffreson, is preparing for publication by Messrs. Longman and Co.

Mr. Sutherland Edwards is engaged on an anecdotal "History of the Opera and Ballet," to be published in two volumes by Messrs. Allen and Co.

• The Reverend James White, the well-known author of historical works, has in the press a "History of England," to be completed in one volume, uniform with the same writer's "History of France."

A richly illustrated work, "Expositions of the Cartoons of Raphael, illustrated by photographs from the originals," by R. H. Smith, jun., is preparing for publication by Messrs. Nisbet and Co.

• Messrs. Day and Son announce as forthcoming, "Views of the City of Lucknow " by Lieutenant-Colonel Dodgson, A.A.G. ; and Specimens of Medire;a1 Architecture," by W. E. Nesfield, Esq.

The Reverend Dr. Rogers, of Stirling, has nearly ready "Familiar Illustrations of Scottish Character," a work on which he is said to have been engaged for upwards of ten years.

Messrs. A. Strahan and Co., Edinburgh, have in the press, "The Gold Thread," by Norman Macleod, D.D. ; and "Praying and Work- ing; or Christian Life in Germany in the Nineteenth Century," by A "History of the Public-School Society of New York," by Wm. 0. Bourne, forming a complete chronicle of the progress of education in that State, from 1797 to 1852, is about to be published at New York.

A new weekly paper, in Italian, entitled, LI Bak Americana, has been started at New York.

Messrs. Michel Levy, freres, Paris, have published " Traitk des Doc- trines Religieuses des Juifs pendant lea Deux Siecles anterieurs it Pere Chretienne; by M. Michel Nicholas.

An interesting contribution to the history of superstition, entitled, "La Magic et PAstrologie dans l'Antiquito et an Moyen-age," by M. Alfred Maury, of the Institute, has been brought out by M. Didier. M. Henri Plon, Paris, has just published Simples Recite de Notre Temps," by M. Cretineau-Joly, Author of " L'Eglise Romaine en face de la Revolution."

M. Maurice Champion has brought out, through Messrs. Dalmont and Dnnot, Paris, "Lea Inondations en France, depuis le Sixieme Siècle jusqu'l nos jours." The seventh volume of M. Cantb's " Histoire des Italiens " contain- ing the reign of Alexander VI., and the expedition of Charles VIII., down to the sack of Rome, has been published by Messrs. Firmin, Didot, and Co.

A new translation, in French, of the New Testament, from a MS. of the Fourth Century, in the library of the Vatican, by M. Albert Rilliet de Candolle, has been brought out by Messrs. Cherbuliez and Co., Geneva.
