Capped

Sir: Mr. Al Capp's non-stop petulance and his lame, albeit strident, ad hoc propter hoc rebuttals in defence of his hero are beginning to pall.

Take his reference to the colloquy between Senator Jackson and Secretary of Agriculture Butz. Jackson, in an effort to discover the reasoning behind the multi-million dollar give-away wheat deal with Russia (a transaction 'that has driven food prices up 20 per cent), became impatient with Butz's waffling responses. With some irritation, Senator Jackson pointed out that it ill behoved the Secretary to spend his time going around the country criticising Senator Irvin in light of the patent mismanagement of his own department.

Mr Capp's knee jerk defensiveness recalls to mind the story of Mr Krushchev proudly showing an American visitor the newly opened Moscow subway. After admiring at length the marbled splendour around him, the American asked, "How many miles of track are in operation?" His host turned on him angrily and responded: " What about the Negroes in the South!"
