Sta,—In Exmouth, at to a.m. this morning, I tried to

buy some herrings, but was refused on the ground that I had come too late to get things in such short supply. At Teigrunouth, six miles away as the fishing-boat sails, 40,000 herrings were recently thrown into the sea, on the ground that there was no demand for them.—Yours faithfully,
