Sir: Your issue largely about Diana, Princess of Wales was

brilliant and wonder- fully sane: from the leader and Trevor McDonald's Diary (excellent man) through to Taki (High life) and Leanda de Lisle (Country life) the writing, not without emo- tion, maintained a sense of balance. Andrew Roberts and Nicholas Farrell were impressive and so were Nicholas Garland's cover and Heath's cartoon. The monarchy will soon regain, I hope, the esteem it nor- mally has and deserves in the hearts and minds of the majority; it makes political sense that it should. A monarch suits this country better than would a president of a republic. Britain as a republic, with a devolved Wales and a possibly separate Scotland one day, could well mean a significant loss of prestige and influence in Europe. And, being in reality a small country, our stature as at present perceived in America and by the world in general would inevitably be diminished.
