Sponger seeks help

Sir: We have all heard the stereotype cast upon students: lazy, loutish and left-wing. Both students (of which I am one) and the general public can accept or reject this popular typecast. But many of my contem- poraries and I are at pains to ignore this ever-increasing labelling from our ex- school chums, now working, and even 'matured' adults.

Something horrid happened the other day. Quaffing at the local inn I was approached by a very muscular fellow and a few of his mates. 'Has anyone called you a sponge?' roared the man. 'I'm not paying my mortgages and taxes,' (yawn) 'just so you can sponge!' The drunken man and his friends (the local football team) were quickly ushered from the pub, leaving me flummoxed as to what the answer would be. As a sixth former, am I a sponge? Can anyone help me out on this one? I'd ask Auberon Waugh, but I can't find him.
