A day for St George

From Mr Anthony Cooney Sir: So the English are aggrieved that the census forms deny their identity or consign them to 'other'? Serves them right! When are the English going to learn that those who make doormats of themselves cannot complain when people wipe their feet on them?

The English have a splendid opportunity peacefully to demonstrate their protest on 23 April, by adorning the land with St George's banners and the population with

roses but will they bother? Will they even know that it's St George's Day?

The patron saint of the English people — that is of Englishmen and women wherever they may be — is St Edmund, king and martyr: the patron saint of the English monarch is St Edward the Confessor; but St George is the patron saint of England — that is, of all who live in England, who taste her salt and have their bread from her bounty, so St George's Day is England's day. Will every house put out its flag, easily made; will every buttonhole sport a rose? If not, kindly refrain from bawling out the census-form collector.
