is a tale of life among the Boers, with plenty of life and colour about it. One cannot, however, help observing that the Hans Van Ponder to whom we are introduced in the first chapter, with his simplicity, not to say stupidity, can hardly be the same as the Hans of his own narrative. In this instance, at least, the child was not father to the man.
