NEWS OF THE WEEK

THE coalminers, voting by representatives in their districts, have by a majority rejected the proposals which were carried by the Industrial Christian Fellowship to the Prime Minister and endorsed by the national meeting of delegates held a fortnight ago. The proposals were approved by the Northumberland district by 59 votes to six. Durham, Nottinghanishire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Bristol were also in favour of theni. Yorkshire was doubtful but finally showed a majority against them. They were also rejected in South Wales, Lancashire and Cinberland. Scotland by demanding a ballot was in effect neutral. We are glad of any activity or discussion in the matter, for a refiisid, sullen or vociferous, on both sides to do anything would leave us in the most hopeless state of all. Yet, as we wrote last week, there was something unreal in all this voting over proposals one of. which was for a four months' subvention which had been definitely ruled out aq..impossible. * *
