Praise indeed

Sir: I find myself in the unusual but happy position of being able to write and congratulate you over your present objective and fairminded comments about Harold Wilson, his wholly logical and not inconsistent Common Market stance, Labour's future under his leadership, and (July 31) on your publication of Enoch Powell's balanced review of his book — as distinct from Paul Foot's overdoctrinaire remarks about it and its writer.

The Spectator in recent weeks has been a joy to read for those, like myself, who, in the past, have felt outraged by its petty bias and its ' personalized ' attacks on Harold Wilson. Your competitors had better look out if you carry on as you are doing! The chief of them with its often inconsistent, self-righteous and ' allover-the-place ' attitude to current affairs and the people involved in them, should not disturb you. I say this because, looking ahead, it rarely pays off to over-cater for those who merely want a short and perhaps exciting run for their money. This is a lesson you seem to have learnt and because of this I have little doubt your attitude if continued will pay off in increased sales based on increasing respect and influence.
